The Beam
Crafted from a reclaimed beam believed to be over 500 years old, once part of an old ship, this piece carries history in every grain. The legs have been scorched using the traditional Japanese technique of Shou Sugi Ban-a method that preserves the wood by charring its surface. This not only enhances durability but also deepens the grain and blackens the legs, creating a striking contrast. The result is a visual illusion that the beam is almost suspended in air-a dramatic yet grounded presence. This piece is now on show at the gallery in Hampton Court as a commission for the Artbuyer and friends
